The Québec breast cancer program aim is to allow early screening to detect breast cancer. This program is established in every region of Québec and invites every woman aged between 50 and 69 to undergo a mammography every 2 years in a designated screening center (see definitions). The goal of the Québec breast cancer screening program is to reduce mortality due to breast cancer by at least 25% among women aged 50 to 69, over a ten-year period.
Many studies show that operating a screening program for a number of years can lower the mortality rate from breast cancer by 25%.
Regional service coordination center The regional service coordination center of the Québec breast cancer screening program (PQDCS) makes sure every eligible woman is invited to take part in the program and taken care of by a doctor. It also supports designated screening centers, referral centers and the population. Invitation letters or reminder and results letters are sent from the regional service coordination center.
Designated screening centersOnly the designated screening centers can offer screening mammograms in the PQDCS. They are designated by the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux. Designated referral centers Designated referral centers are specialized centers where additional examinations following a mammography are performed free of charge. They are located in public health infrastructures and maintain a direct link with the designated screening centers should a woman need additional examinations.
