Childcare providers must comply with the provisions of the regulations regarding the administration, labelling and storage of medication.
Clientele Any person who, in a childcare establishment, administers medication to children, or who labels and stores the medication.
Conditions Administration of medication No medication may be administered to a child without the written authorization of a parent and a member of the Collège des médecins du Québec. In the case of prescribed medication, the information provided by the pharmacist on the medication label is proof of the physician's authorization.
Exceptions Acetaminophen (Tempra, Atasol, Tylenol, etc.) may be administered to a child without medical authorization, provided it is done in accordance with the Protocol for Administering Acetaminophen, and that the Authorization Form for the Administration of Acetaminophen at the bottom of the Protocol has been completed and signed by a parent.
Insect repellent may be applied to a child's skin without medical authorization, provided it is done in accordance with the Protocol for Applying Insect Repellent , and that the Authorization Form for the Application of Insect Repellent at the bottom of the Protocol has been completed and signed by a parent.
The following products may also be administered to a child without medical authorization, but with the written authorization of a parent:
Note Childcare providers must ensure that any medication administered to a child has been provided by a parent.
A register in which information concerning the administration of any medication to a child is recorded must be kept in the childcare establishment. The person who administers the medication to the child must record the following information in the register:

Storage of medication Childcare providers must ensure that all medication is clearly labelled and stored in a space reserved for that purpose, out of the reach of children and away from food, toxic products and cleaning products. The storage space must be kept locked at all times.
Exceptions The following products do not have to be stored under lock and key:
Note A home childcare provider must store the medication for the children cared for apart from the medication used in the residence where the childcare is provided.
