Part-time students (see Definitions) can obtain financial assistance in the form of a loan under the ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur Loans Program for Part-Time Studies, run by Aide financière aux études.
Students awarded financial assistance following their first application under this program will receive a guarantee certificate. This document is required in order for payments to be deposited in the student’s bank account.
Students awarded financial assistance under the Loans Program for Part-Time Studies are required to inform Aide financière aux études of the ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur of any changes in their circumstances over the course of the award year that could affect the amount of financial assistance awarded to them.
It is of utmost importance that students keep their file up to date so as to avoid any number of inconveniences, such as:
As a rule, any change in circumstances over the course of the award year is considered as of the month following the change.
Drop in income A drop of at least 10% in the income of the student’s parents, sponsor or spouse if the latter is not a student is taken into consideration each year. The same holds for changes in the number of dependent children of the student’s parents, sponsor or spouse.
Award year The period between September 1 of one year and August 31 of the following year.
Spouse The person who is married to or in a civil union with the student, or the person of the opposite or the same sex who lives with the student in a de facto union with a child of the person or of the student.
Study period Period of the school year during which a student attends an educational institution. A study period generally lasts four months, but the duration may vary according to the educational institution’s school calendar.
Refugee A person to whom asylum is granted and who therefore may remain in Canada for an indeterminate period of time. That person may be
Sponsor The person who agreed to provide for the basic needs of the student when he or she obtained status as a permanent resident, refugee or protected person. That person is not a guardian, but rather a sponsor within the meaning of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Part-time Student status determined on the basis of the set number of course hours or credits, i.e. between 76 and 179 course hours or between 6 and 11 credits for a study period (see the definition above).
Clientele Any person may apply for student financial assistance if the person is pursuing part-time studies (see Definitions)
A person enrolled in a distance learning program at a college or university-level educational institution recognized by the ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur may also apply for student financial assistance.

The procedure for notifying Aide financière aux études of a change in circumstances is the same for the student and the student’s parents, sponsor or spouse.
The amount of the financial assistance awarded as a loan is calculated on the basis of the student’s education expenses and, if applicable, childcare expenses.
Financial assistance payments are normally made at the beginning of the study period (see Definitions).
The Loans Program for Part-Time Studies has been in force since 2002.
