When a vehicle's owner changes, i.e. ownership of the vehicle is transferred, the new owner must have it registered in his or her name. Transfer of ownership occurs in particular following:

Verifying the right to register a vehicle
The Société may refuse to register a vehicle acquired following a transaction between individuals if one of them is prohibited from registering a vehicle or selling a vehicle registered in his or her name (for example, if the driver has unpaid fines on record).
It is recommended to check whether the vehicle can be registered before entering into a transaction with another individual.

If the person selling or buying the vehicle has an unpaid fine on record, the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec will refuse to register the vehicle until it has received confirmation that the fine has been paid from the body responsible for collecting it.
A person selling a vehicle to a dealer may be entitled to receive a refund for the remaining portion of the vehicle’s registration. The amount granted is based on the remaining term until the registration certificate expires.
