Revenu Québec is the single agency responsible for recovering and provisionally administering unclaimed property. Such property includes unclaimed successions (estates), property located in Québec whose owners are unknown or untraceable and property of dissolved legal persons.
Notices of quality Revenu Québec publishes notices of quality indicating the names of the persons on whose behalf it is responsible for liquidating property. It also tries to inform property owners and other interested parties of the existence of such property.
Notices of quality are published
Revenu Québec tries to trace as many property owners and interested parties as possible by publishing these notices of quality.
Revenu Québec returns unclaimed property it administers (or remits the property’s value) to owners or other interested parties, provided they assert their claim within the prescribed time limits. Claimants must establish their entitlement, that is, they must show that they are the owner of the property (or an interested party in respect of the property), in accordance with Revenu Québec’s requirements. For these services, Revenu Québec charges fees, which are fixed by regulation.
Auctions When Revenu Québec liquidates unclaimed property under its administration, it does so by means of auctions conducted by an auctioneer in the Montréal area.
The auctions are open to the public and always held on Saturdays at 9 a.m. in Montréal. Approximately ten auctions are held each year. To inform the public that an auction will take place, the auctioneer publishes notices in two daily news papers, La Presse and The Gazette , on the Saturday preceding each auction.
Register of unclaimed property The register of unclaimed property lists all unclaimed property that has been transferred to Revenu Québec.
The following types of unclaimed property are listed in the register :
Interested party An interested party is a person with a right to unclaimed property. An interested party may claim property as
AuctioneerPerson who appraises unclaimed property and conducts its sale at an auction.
Since the clientele and the conditions may differ from one service to another, this information is presented individually for each service.
Since April 1, 2006, Revenu Québec has been the single agency responsible for recovering and administering unclaimed property.
