Notifying the Régie du bâtiment du Québec of the Death of a Licence Holder

To notify the Régie du bâtiment du Québec of the death of a licence holder (or an officer or guarantor associated with that licence), you must send the RBQ a written notice within 30 days of the death.

However, if the declarant of the death filled out the form entitled Application for the Simplified Forwarding of Information Relative to the Death, which is enclosed with the declaration of death, the Directeur de l’état civil will notify the RBQ. In that event, the RBQ will not require any proof of death. Nevertheless, you should contact the RBQ to find out what other formalities are required.

Following the death of
  • the licence holder: construction activities may continue to be carried out by the liquidator of the succession, the heir, the legatee or the legal representative for a maximum of 120 days
  • a guarantor associated with the licence: a new guarantor must be named within 120 days, failing which the licence will become invalid.
