Process: Transfer of Ownership of a Vehicle | Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec

Selling a Vehicle to a Dealer

A person  who sells a vehicle to a dealer must remit the registration certificate to the dealer after endorsing it. The dealer will then give the person the duly filled out Attestation de transaction avec un commerçant (in French only) form.

If the person is not purchasing a new vehicle, he or she must go to a service outlet of the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec, having the following on hand:

    • His or her licence plate
    • Photo identification, preferably the driver's licence
    • The Attestation de transaction avec un commerçant form

If the person is purchasing a vehicle (new or used), he or she must go to a service outlet of the Société with the Attestation de transaction avec un commerçant form and proof of identity, preferably a driver's licence with photo, on hand in order to register the new vehicle (the old licence plate can be used on the new vehicle).

To find a service outlet of the Société, use the online service.

Note

If the dealership to which the vehicle is sold is an approved SAAQclic user and authorized to perform the transaction, it will carry out the vehicle transfer.
