Driver’s Licence: General Information

Notifying the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec of the Death of a Driver's Licence Holder

To notify the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) of the death of a driver’s licence holder, bring the deceased person’s driver’s licence and proof of death to a service outlet of the SAAQ.
However, if you have completed the form Application for the Simplified Forwarding of Information relative to the Death, which is enclosed with the declaration of death, the Directeur de l’état civil will notify the SAAQ. In this case, you are not required to provide the SAAQ with proof of death. Nevertheless, you should contact the SAAQ to find out what other formalities are required to obtain a refund of the driver’s licence fees, cancel the licence and put the vehicle in storage or transfer ownership.
To find a SAAQ service outlet, use the online service Find a service outlet.
