Unclaimed Financial Assets
A person who, after consulting the register, believes that he or she has a right in an unclaimed financial asset must complete the relevant forms and send them to the Direction principale des biens non réclamés at Revenu Québec, with the required documents. If the financial asset is part of a succession, complete the form Declaration of Heredity and Transmission by Death (LE-81.4-V).
Revenu Québec charges a fee of 10% of the value of the unclaimed financial asset (minimum of $2, up to a maximum of $1,000).
Financial assetsIf the value of an unclaimed financial asset is less than $500, its owner has ten years to claim it, starting on the day the asset is transferred to the ministère des Finances du Québec. There is no time limit in other cases.
The time needed to process a claim varies depending on its complexity, and may be as long as several months.
For the list of required documents, see the claim forms. Required documents and required supporting documents are used to demonstrate the status and rights of the claimant in respect of the unclaimed financial asset. The required documents vary, depending on the value of the property claimed and the claimant’s situation.
