Health Insurance Plan: General Information on the Public Plan

For a child to be eligible for the public health insurance plan, the parent with whom he or she permanently lives with must be recognized as a:
To register for the health insurance plan a child born outside of Québec or who was adopted, a person must:
If the child is 14 years old or over, the child and the parent must got to a service point or reception office. If the child files his or her application at a service point, he or she must also bring a photo that meets the standards of the If the application is files at one of the two Régie reception offices, the photo will be taken on site.
Once a person's application for registration is processed, the Régie sends that person a letter indicating the date from which the person will be able to receive health insurance services. The person receives his or her health insurance card within 2 weeks following that date.
Health care services received by a child under 1 year of age who does not yet have his or her health insurance card covered by the public health insurance plan. The physician may, however, ask for one of the parent's cards.
The child of a parent temporarily staying in Québec is generally insured by the plan for the duration of the stay.
Generally, the child of the parent who has settled in Québec must renew his or her health insurance card every 8 years.
Anyone wishing to find out which documents are required if the child was adopted in or outside Québec must contact the Régie.
The documents required if the child was born outside Québec but was not adopted vary depending on the situation.
If the child is a Canadian citizen, the original of one of the following documents must be provided:
