A declaration of family residence can be made by:
- Completing the form Declaration of family residence made by one of the married spouse or by one of the civil union spouse or Declaration of family residence made by the married spouses or by the civil union spouses, according to the case, and having it signed by two witnesses, of whom one must be sworn in, and completing the Notice of address form;
- Adding a mention to this effect in the contract for the purchase of the immovable.
Each document completed must be sent to the registry office located in the registration division of the immovable in question in order to be entered in the Québec land register.

A declaration of family residence concerning a dwelling for which at least one of the spouses is a tenant can be made by:
- Notifying the owner, preferably in writing, by registered mail or any other method providing proof of receipt, and stating that the dwelling is a family residence;
- Adding a clause to the lease, before it is signed, stating that the dwelling is a family residence.
