If you have a low income, you might qualify for the Rent Supplement Program. You could be entitled to financial assistance for the rental of a private-sector dwelling or a housing unit belonging to a housing cooperative or a non-profit organization.
The Rent Supplement Program enables low-income households and individuals to rent a private-sector dwelling or a housing unit belonging to a housing cooperative or a non-profit organization for a rent similar to what they would pay for low-rental housing. The Rent Supplement makes up the difference between the rent agreed upon with the landlord and the household’s basic contribution (25% of its income). Administration of the Rent Supplement Program is entrusted mainly to
HouseholdPerson or group of persons living in a dwelling.
Household contribution The basic rental charge is equal to 25% of the household’s total income for the calendar year preceding the signing of the lease.
However, depending on the services included in the lease, certain charges or deductions may change the basic rental amount (e.g. charges to cover the cost of electricity, heating, hot water, parking or air conditioning).
Rent Supplement The Société d'habitation du Québec pays the Rent Supplement to the landlord to cover the difference between the rent actually paid by the tenant and the rent recognized by the Société, which usually corresponds to the rent specified in the lease.
