The Directeur de l'état civil issues civil status documents pertaining to marriage or civil union, i.e. certificates of marriage or civil union, copies of acts of marriage or civil union, and attestations of marriage or civil union. Those documents contain the information shown in the Québec register of civil status, and are drawn up in accordance with the spelling in the act of marriage or civil union. The language used on the certificate or copy of an act is determined according to the language used to declare and register the marriage or civil union in the register of civil status.
Certificate of marriage or civil unionThis document indicates the surnames and given names of the spouses or civil union partners, their sex, date and place of the marriage or civil union, registration number, and issue date of the certificate. Copy of act of marriage or civil unionThis document integrally reproduces the information in the act of marriage or civil union (information may be missing if the marriage was performed before 1994). Attestation of marriage or civil unionThis is a letter bearing the seal of the Directeur de l'état civil. It attests to the presence or absence of a person's act of marriage or civil union in the Québec register of civil status, or of any other inscription legally required to be indicated on the act. An attestation does not serve the same purpose as a certificate or copy of an act.
