You can make your change of address with the Direction de l’indemnisation des victimes d’actes criminels by telephone, mail or fax.
If you received compensation, you must notify the Direction de l’indemnisation des victimes d’actes criminels of your new address so that you will receive the RL-5 slip, which must be submitted with your income tax return.
Under the Act to promote good citizenship , a person who is injured or sustains property damage while voluntarily coming to the assistance of another person whose life or physical integrity is in danger may receive compensation. The dependants of a person who died while coming to another person’s assistance may also receive compensation.
Clientele and conditions are discussed in reference to each service as they can vary depending on the service involved.
Injured rescuer or rescuer who has sustained property damage
A rescuer who is injured may receive the same compensation as a crime victim. Such compensation includes:
- compensation for temporary total disability;
- permanent disability benefits.
In addition, the rescuer may:
- be reimbursed for medical assistance costs;
- receive rehabilitation services.
In the event of material injury, the rescuer may obtain compensation of up to $1,000.
None of those benefits are taxable.
Deceased rescuer
If a rescuer dies, his or her dependants may receive a pension, the amount of which is determined on the basis of the rescuer’s salary.
The pension that is paid to the rescuer’s spouse may be terminated in certain situations. However, it is paid for a minimum period of five years.
Any person who covered the rescuer’s funeral expenses may obtain a reimbursement of up to $600.
Any person who covered the cost of transporting the rescuer’s body may obtain a reimbursement of up to $500.
Direct deposit
Benefits can be received by direct deposit or by cheque.
Change of address
A person who has filed an application under the Act to promote good citizenship must notify the Direction de l'indemnisation des victimes d'actes criminels (IVAC) of any change of address in order to keep his or her file up to date.
Compensation for temporary total disability ceases to be paid as of the date the rescuer returns to work or resumes most of his or her usual activities.
A dependant’s entitlement to benefits is effective as of the rescuer’s date of death.
