To make your change of address for your hunter’s or trapper’s certificate, you may complete the online form, telephone the Service à la clientèle of the Ministère or contact a licence a selling agent.
A hunter’s or trapper’s certificate is a document attesting that a person is recognized as being qualified to handle hunting implements (firearm, crossbow, bow) or trapping implements.
Every person who successfully completes the courses in the Programme d'éducation en sécurité et en conservation de la faune required for the type of hunting he or she wishes to practise is automatically issued a certificate. The certificate is issued within 30 days following the end of the courses.
The cost of issuing a person’s first hunter’s or trapper’s certificate is included in the cost of the courses the person is required to take in order to obtain the certificate.
Note
All hunter’s or trapper’s certificates issued in Québec on or after March 31, 1994 have permanent status. Certificates issued and expired before March 31, 1994 may receive permanent status if the certificate holder applies to have it replaced. The sticker that formerly indicated permanent status for certain certificates is no longer used. Permanent status is now determined by expiration date.
A hunter’s or trapper’s certificate is required in order to purchase
- a Québec resident’s hunting licence, whether for hunting with a firearm (including a crossbow) or a bow;
- a Québec resident’s trapping licence.
The certificate is a plastified card which must show
- the hunter’s or trapper’s last name and first name;
- his or her date of birth;
- his or her signature;
- the certificate number;
- the expiration date or an indication that the card is permanent;
- the code corresponding to the activity for which it was issued:
- code A for hunting with a bow or crossbow,
- code B for hunting with a crossbow,
- code F for hunting with a firearm,
- code P for trapping,
- code C or code L for the firearms safety course,
- for hunting with a firearm or crossbow, code C or code L has been a mandatory complementary course for code F since March 31, 1994.
Note
A hunter’s or trapper’s certificate with code F is proof of course equivalency as required before filling out an Application for a Possession and Acquisition Licence for firearms, to be filed with the Sûreté du Québec. The Sûreté du Québec may also impose certain additional conditions.
To obtain a hunter’s or trapper’s certificate, a person must
- reside in Québec;
- be 12 or over;
- successfully complete one of the following programs, according to his or her situation:
- the Programme d'éducation en sécurité et en conservation de la faune (PESCOF);
- the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC), for hunting with a firearm, and the Introduction to Hunting with a Firearm (IHF) module;
