If you are 65 years of age or older and have a valid health insurance card, you are entitled to a complete eye examination each year.
The Québec Health Insurance Plan covers various services rendered by optometrists to certain insured persons. However, the eye examination necessary in the event of a sudden eye problem is covered for all insured persons.
In order to receive these services at no cost, persons seeking treatment must present their health insurance card and, for recipients of last-resort financial assistance, their claim slip.
NoteNo fees can be charged to an insured person for services covered by the Régie, some exceptions apply. A person who thinks a health professional should not have charged him or her certain health services can contact the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec to claim a refund.
Services rendered by an optometrist are covered for the following persons insured under the Québec Health Insurance Plan:
persons with a sudden eye problem.

NotePersons under the age of 18 and those aged 65 or over, are entitled to only one eye health and vision examination and only one colour vision test per calendar year. Recipients of last-resort financial assistance are entitled to the same services once every calendar years.
