If you have difficulty filling out your income tax returns and do not have the means to pay a specialist to do it, you are entitled to free assistance from volunteers.
The Volunteer Program was created to enable persons whose financial situation is simple and whose income is low to obtain free assistance in order to complete their income tax returns.
The program is administered jointly by the Canada Revenue Agency and Revenu Québec.
Recruitment of volunteers Volunteers are recruited via associations, community groups and non-profit organizations. They are not tax specialists, but people who have time to offer during the tax season.
Training of volunteers The volunteers recruited receive training to familiarize them with the tax measures affecting persons targeted by the program and to acquaint them with the income tax returns they will called on to complete. They do not complete returns covering tax situations for which they have not been trained.
Tax return preparation sessions Volunteers assist taxpayers during tax return preparation sessions that are held on the premises of organizations participating in the program. The sessions are scheduled by these organization based on the needs in each region.
The organizations are responsible for organizing and conducting the sessions. They are supported, as necessary, by personnel from the Canada Revenue Agency and Revenu Québec.
Volunteers can also count on assistance from Canada Revenue Agency and Revenu Québec personnel if they need additional information in completing returns.
The Volunteer Program has existed since 1988 in Québec.
