Applying for an Attestation of Birth

Important Notice

This page is being updated. Meanwhile, as the information currently online may not be complete, we invite you to consult the French version. Thank you for your understanding.

Anyone can apply for an attestation of birth provided the fact or notation to be attested to is information found on the birth certificate.

If not, the applicant must justify his or her interest in obtaining the attestation.

People applying for an attestation of birth should make sure that an attestation is the right document for the circumstances. An attestation is not an official proof of birth and does not replace a certificate of birth or a copy of an act of birth.

To obtain an attestation of birth, complete the Application for an Attestation form.

You may go in person to one of the Directeur de l’état civil offices with the request for an attestation along with the required payment. It may also be sent by mail or fax.

Note
When a request is sent by fax, the quality of the documents received may vary and they may not be legible. If so, there will be a delay in processing the request.

To justify your interest
If applicable, justify your interest by explaining the reason for your request on the request form and enclose a photocopy of an official document supporting the reason given.
