Becoming a Parent

Recognition of Pre-Existing Bonds of Filiation and Communication Agreements with the Biological Family

Adoptive parents can opt to have their child’s original filial bond with the birth parent(s) recognized. They can also come to an agreement with the child’s biological family, thereby allowing the adopted child to maintain some kind of relationship with members of his or her birth family. If the adopted child is at least 10 years old, he or she must consent to such an agreement.
