The Family Allowance Measure

Notifying Retraite Québec of the Death of a Beneficiary of the Family allowance, or the Death of the Beneficiary's Spouse or Child

To notify Retraite Québec of the death of a beneficiary of the Family allowance or the death of his or her spouse, you are not required to take any action if the death occurred in Québec. The death will be reported to the Directeur de l’état civil, who notifies Retraite Québec automatically.

If the death did not take place in Québec, contact Retraite Québec and provide a proof of death.

A person who assumes the care of a deceased beneficiary’s child must file a new application for the Family allowance payment, and, if applicable, for the supplement for handicapped children and the supplement for handicapped children requiring exceptional care.

To notify Retraite Québec of the death of the child of a beneficiary:

  • If the death took place in Québec, call Retraite Québec.
  • If the death took place outside of Québec, do one of the following:
    • Fill out the form Change in the Number of Dependent Children – Family allowance, attach a death certificate or a copy of the act of death, and mail to Retraite Québec.
    • Or, call Retraite Québec and provide a death certificate or a copy of the act of death.
