Celebration of a Marriage or Civil Union

Declaring a Marriage or Civil Union

Please refer to the French version of this page for information regarding special measures taken for COVID-19.

To declare a marriage or a civil union, proceed as follows:
  1. On the day of the ceremony, following the exchange of consent between the spouses, complete the Declaration of Marriage or Declaration of Civil Union form, as the case may be (these forms are sent directly to the officiant by the Directeur de l’état civil).
  2. Sign the form, have it signed by the spouses and their witnesses by the prescribed deadline, and mail it to the Directeur de l'état civil in Québec.

One-day officiants, meaning individuals who are designated by the couple and are authorized to perform only this marriage or civil union, must also send the Directeur de l’état civil the complete marriage or civil union file (including the required documents) by the prescribed deadline.

Choice of Language
You must use the version of the form that corresponds to the spouses’ language (French or English). The act of marriage or civil union will be drawn up in the chosen language. No corrections regarding the language of the act will be made, unless a mistake has been made in entering the marriage or civil union.
Confirmation of the Entry in the Register
You and the spouses will then receive a letter from the Directeur de l’état civil confirming the event has been entered in the Québec register of civil status. If the information in the letter is not consistent with the information shown in the declaration of marriage or civil status, the Directeur de l’état civil must be notified immediately.
