When a Couple Separates.

Tax and financial effects

Your situation will be different after your separation or divorce, or the dissolution of your civil union. It is important for each spouse to accurately assess the financial impacts of the family reorganization. Many expenses will be affected, especially housing or transportation expenses. Income tax or retirement savings are other elements to consider.

The tax rules that apply to your new situation may result in changes. For example, your eligibility for government programs or services may be reassessed. The amounts of benefits or financial assistance you receive may change.

Among other things, you will have to inform Revenu Québec of your new situation.
