If you receive a retirement pension from the Régie des rentes du Québec, you may return to work without a pension reduction. However, if you receive a disability pension and you return to work (temporarily or part time), or if your employment earnings increase, you may lose entitlement to the pension.
Retirement pension
The beneficiary of a retirement pension paid by the Régie des rentes du Québec can return to work without a pension reduction, regardless of the beneficiary’s age or employment income. However, the beneficiary must start contributing to the Québec Pension Plan as soon as his or her employment income exceeds the basic exemption under the Plan, which is $3,500. On the other hand, the beneficiary’s pension will be increased by an amount equal to 0.5% of the earnings on which he or she contributed for the previous year. This pension supplement is spread out over 12 months and is paid each year.
Disability pension
The beneficiary of a disability pension who returns to work, even temporarily or part-time, is no longer entitled to a disability pension paid by the Régie des rentes du Québec if he or she
- performs substantially gainful work for more than 3 months;
- receives a full income replacement indemnity from the Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail for more than 15 consecutive days in a given month.
Under the Act respecting the Québec Pension Plan, the beneficiary of a disability pension must immediately inform the Régie, by telephone or in writing, if he or she returns to work.
Any beneficiary of a retirement or disability pension paid by the Régie des rentes du Québec who returns to work.
