If your income is low and you spend a significant portion of your income (30% or more) on housing, you could be eligible for the Shelter Allowance Program.
The shelter allowance program provides financial assistance for low-income households that spend too much of their budget on rent. The Société d'habitation du Québec has entrusted the management of the shelter allowance program to Revenu Québec.

Eligibility To qualify for the shelter allowance program, an individual must:
The allowance is based on the number of people in the household, the type of household, the rent paid and the annual household income. The maximum allowance is $80 per month. The allowance is not taxable.
The shelter allowance is calculated annually and paid by cheque or direct deposit on the first business day of each month. The recipient receives the allowance in equal monthly payments of not less than $10, up to the total amount granted.
The allowance is paid by cheque or direct deposit on the first working day of each month.
The allowance may be granted in the month following the date of the application to Revenu Québec, if the applicant’s eligibility is established during the month in which the application is received.
